This was followed up in 1993 with the genius of Men at Arms. The plot was a moral for our times, being the Discworld's first encounter with the recently invented gonne. With his wedding looming to Sybil Ramkin and a silent assassin hell bent on social change, Vimes and the City Watch had a lot on their plate (or stick, as is often the case in the Discworld).<br />
<br />
In 1996, Terry Pratchett published Feet of Clay. Steeped in religious mythology from both Hebrew and Biblical references, Feet of Clay left the watch to contend with a half-baked king golem, a poisoned Patrician and a grisly vampire of old orders. Luckily, Vimes (now Commander) and Captain Carrot have a new forensic investigator at the Watch, in the form of Cheery Littlebottom to help solve the mystery, along with friendly golem Dorfl.<br />
<br />
Jingo (1997) saw the City Watch taking to the ocean waves with a mad mission to Klatch to shore up international relations. The resurfacing of an island equidistance between Ankh-Morpork and Al Khali, the capital city of Klatch, sets in motion events that force Lord Vetinari to step down and brings about the disbanding of the City Watch. Using his peerage as legal leverage, Vimes recruits the watch into his own personal army and sets off to Al Khali to sort things out.<br />
<br />
The Fifth Elephant (1999) sends Vimes and the rest of the Watch out into the wilds of Uberwald with vampires, werewolves and dwarfs by the score. The main nemesis was Angua's werewolf brother Wolfgang, leaving Angua, Carrot and Vimes with the job of sorting the mess out while Colon is left to make his own mess back in Ankh-Morpork.<br />
<br />
Night Watch (2002) is epic. Vimes is caught in a magical storm and flung back to his own past along with psychotic criminal Carcer Dun. With revolutions, assassinations and broken timelines to contend with, Vimes must return order to the streets of old Ankh-Morpork before returning to his own future.<br />
<br />
Terry Pratchett returned to the City Watch in 2005 with Thud! An old war, the murder of a politically active dwarf and art thieves all consume Vimes' efforts to split his time between the Watch and his personal life, being a dedicated father now.<br />
<br />
The most recent City Watch book by Terry Pratchett, Snuff, sees Vimes on his travels once again. Murder is at the heart of it all as Sam Vimes and his wife Sybil Ramkin head to their house in the country. Snuff apparently sees bodies and an ancient crime landing at Vimes' feet almost as soon as his heels touch the soft earth of the country soil.<br />
<br />
With so much Watch brilliance already written and the anticipation of Terry Pratchett's Snuff, hopefully there will be more than a few books with Sam Vimes and the City Watch still to come.
